1975 IN REVIEW
On Christmas Eve, 1974, Bart Starr, a five-time NFL champion as a player, was named Packers head coach and general manager with the hope he could lead the team to additional titles in his new role. Starr faced a number of challenges. Dan Devine had traded away many of the team's top draft choices. All-Pro linebacker Ted Hendricks became a free agent after contract talks broke off in July. Four days later, cornerback Ken Ellis walked out of camp in a contract dispute. In August, offensive lineman Bill Lueck asked to be traded. Hendricks was sent to Oakland in return for two first-round draft choices (1976 and 1977). Ellis was fined and suspended for a weel. Lueck was shipped to Philadelphia for a fourth round pick in 1976. In Starr's first trek as coach the Packers struggled early and got off to an 0-4 start after stunning the Cowboys for Bart Starr's first coaching win the Pack continued to struggle eventually going 1-8. However, the Packers would end the season winning 3 of their final 5.
JOHN BROCKINGTON - WHAT WENT WRONG?
For three glorious years, John Brockington was one of the premier running backs in the NFL. He was the first NFL player to ever rush for 1,000 or more yards in each of his first three seasons. In 1971 Brockington was named AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Brockington was also selected to 3 consecutive Pro Bowls (1971-1973). Then, in 1974, Brockington ran for "just" 883 yards. The following year was even worse, with 434 yards, followed by 406 yards in 1976. On September 21, 1977, the Packers cut their former workhorse, three days after he passed the 5,000-yard rushing mark for his career, leaving fans to wonder what went wrong: WEAR AND TEAR - Brockington was the featured running back at Ohio State in his senior year and finished with 1,142 rushing yards, which was, at the time, the Ohio State single-season record. In his first four years in Green Bay, he carried the ball 1,021 times, leaving many to believe his body simply gave out similar to what happened to Earl Campbell.
MACARTHUR LANE - Prior to the 1975 season, the Packers traded Lane to Kansas City for a draft choice. At the time, there were indications the Packers thought the clock had run out on the brusing back, but he put in four productive years with the Chiefs, including a NFL-leading 66 receptions in 1976. Without Lane, Brockington lost the one compliment he needed to succeed.
OFFENSIVE LINE/QUARTERBACK - Trouble at these positions spelled disaster for Brockington. Opposing defenses knew that the Packers had little to no passing game in the final years of Brockington's tenure, and he openly complained about the poor offensive line play in his last few seasons.
WORLD FOOTBALL LEAGUE - The Chicago Fire drafted Brockington in 1974, and Dan Devine panicked. He signed Brockington to a 3-year, no-cut contract worth $150-200,000 per year. The size of the deal made it virtually impossible to trade Brockington, even when he asked for one in 1975.

"The Green Bay Packers: A Pictorial Drama (1975). This book was a curious concept for a book on a professional football team. From the book flap: “The emphasis is not on creating a definitive historical document, but rather on recreating the moods — in words and photos — of the many dramatic moments that make up Packer lore.” It is written like the script to a play or a film, and frankly, if it weren’t for the photos, we’d probably have passed on obtaining a copy." - Packerville, USA for more pictures and content)
Vince Lombardi: Football Legend (1975): "This youth-oriented book (seen above without the dust cover, which is long-gone) is “a brief biography of the football coach who turned Wisconsin's Green Bay Packers into a virtually unbeatable team.” If you’d like to teach your son or daughter about the Packers’ legendary head coach, Vince Lombardi — A Football Legend might be a good place to start." - Packerville, USA for more pictures and content)

SEPT 2 - Refusing to go along with the kind of financial arrangements that spelled disaster a year ago, the WFL instead has revoked the Chicago Winds franchise. The removal of the Winds following withdrawal of two of the club's key investors, leaves 10 WFL teams to carry on through the remainder of the league's second season. When the Chicago franchise was formed, certain partnership documents and other ownership arrangements were not completed. Two of the club's backers placed their investment totaling $175,000 with the league, pending clarification and finalization of the ownership documents. But that clarification and finalization never came. One delay led to another and finally, the investors decided to pull out. They withdrew their funds, leaving the Winds below the WFL's minimum capitalization requirements. As part of the player dispersal, Philadelphia got WR John Gilliam and QB Pete Beathard. San Antonio acquired RB Mark Kellar, DE Larry Jameson and WR Margene Adkins. The same day, former coach Babe Parilli filed a $540,000 lawsuit, charging Chicago and the World Football League fired him illegally. Parilli was hired as Winds' coach on June 12 and was replaced July 28 by former Chicago Bear Coach Abe Gibron.

MONDAY OCT 13 - Owners of the 10 WFL teams were to meet in New York this week to discuss the possibility of disbanding the two-year-old, financially troubled league. In a last-ditch attempt to keep the rest of the league afloat, the owners are considering folding the Portland Thunder and Philadelphia Bell franchises which have been plagued by poor attendance, UPI has learned. "You're damned right it could be critical," Memphis Southmen owner John Bassett said Sunday, confirming plans for the meeting. The Thunder has averaged 8,861 fans at home while the Bell's attendance averaged 3,705 through the first four home contests. Another candidate for possible dissolution was San Antonio, which reportedly needed a $450,000 transfusion to keep going. But the sources said San Antonio is averaging 11,000 fans per home game and may escape the axe.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 18
PHILADELPHIA 18, Charlotte 10 (1293) - Claude Watts set a club rushing record to lead the Bell to the win in a persistent rain before a dismal crowd. Watts rushed for 136 yards, surpassing a Bell mark of 121 yards set last season by John Land. Watts scored what proved to be the winning TD on a one-yard sweep one minute into the final period. The Bell rolled to a club record 248 yards on the ground and shut down the Charlotte offense.

OCTOBER 22 - Unable to attract fans, unable to sign many name players and unable to overcome the bad memories of 1974, the World Football League gave up on its dream of regaining respectability and folded in mid-season here Wednesday. In the 12th week of the second year of the most unsuccessful professional sports league ever formed, the WFL folded its tent. Left behind were 380 football players suddenly without jobs and $30 million lost since the bright summer days of 1974 when Garry Davison and his supporters were predicting expansion around the world. Chris Hemmeter, the Hawaiian millionaire who rescued the WFL from almost certain death last winter with a financing formula that tied player salaries to ticket sales, headed back to his island home Wednesday after announcing there was no point in the league going on. The WFL ceased operations on Wednesday, apparently making all its players free signed by whatever National Football League team holds their rights. The NFL ruled a month ago, in the case of John Gilliam, that any player under contract to a team or league which folded could be signed prior to 4 p.m. on Oct. 28. The WFL voted 6-4 to fold. Memphis, Charlotte, Jacksonville and San Antonio were the clubs voting to continue to play for the remainder of the season. After the other six voted no, Memphis then joined Birmingham in making application for membership in the NFL. That application was rejected in March 1976. After announcing the death of the WFL, Wings owner Norm Bevan indicated that San Antonio might join three other WFL teams - Shreveport, Charlotte and Jacksonville - in forming the nucleus of a new pro league for 1976. No such league ever came to pass. The very last gasp of the WFL came in December 1979 when several former owners - John E. Bosacco (former owner of the Philadelphia Bell), Mid-South Grizzlies (a limited partnership headed by Toronto businessman John F. Bassett, which owned the Memphis Southmen) and Consolidated Industries Inc., headed by businessman William R. Tatham (owner of the Portland Storm) - filed a $144 million suit against the NFL over the denial of Memphis' request to join. On May 30, 1984, the Supreme Court let stand without comment a ruling that denied the franchise to the owners of the Mid-South Grizzlies. A federal judge had dismissed the suit, and an appeals court, upholding the dismissal, said in November 1983 that no anitrust violation had occurred.
